Winter

It is a truth universally acknowledged that I am not a winter person. Sure, it's pretty enough when it's not raining. And it is fun to curl up by the open fire. But I love being outside. I love drawing in the garden, or exploring the countryside. I like that warmth on my skin after a day outside in the hot sun.

The picture above is my studio at the moment. Do you see that? That's frost. Pretty to look at, yes. Comfortable to work in, hmm, not so much. So I have moved brushes to my bedroom until the sun returns.

I've also used the time indoors to reupholster an old nursing chair we have. I've been meaning to do it since we moved in, but couldn't find any fabric I liked. Finally, I found this when I visited Marrakech in November (a search for the sun getaway). It is exactly what I had in mind and I am really pleased with how it turned out.

So until spring arrives, you can find me crossed legged on this, book in hand, dreaming of the sun.

Happy New Year everyone!

What we choose to see...

I wasn't going to post this, but my parents have talked me round. I drew this a couple of days ago. It's my response to what I've seen, and not seen, in the media lately.

I heard about the Chibok abductions on Monday, through some well connected Facebook friends. I believe it didn't really hit the news until yesterday, and even now, it's still not headlining.

The fact that two hundred girls have been taken to who-knows-where to have let's-not-even-imagine-what done to them is hideous, atrocious. Sometimes, the evil things that happen in this world make me shudder. Wherever these girls are at this moment, I am praying for them; that they will see their families again, that they will survive.

In case you still haven't heard, and to be fair, it has been quite possible that you may have missed it, this article will bring you up to speed.

"Our grievance is this: for the past two weeks and this is the third week, we have not heard anybody talking to us."
Naomi Mutah, protest leader.

My image above was in response to the anger I feel at what I see daily in the media, and social media.  And the priorities it seems to have. That we seem to have. That caring about things like which celebrity has the best bottom is the most important thing we can be doing. I could rant about this for hours, the way women are presented continuously to us, the affect that is having on our own self esteem, and the self esteem of our sisters, our daughters, the way our men see us... And sometimes I think, it's not just extremist groups like Boko Haram who are trying to squash female education, intellect, and achievement. Sometimes it's us, here in the western world, and the things we chose to look at or ignore. Sometimes it's women themselves, with their selfies and Instagram, who devalue the beauty and wonder of women. I know it's not consciously done, but I do actually think we have a responsibility to try to be conscious. To be aware.

If the media can be good for anything, it can do this. You can't tell me that if this had happened here, or in the States, there would not be the loudest noise going on about this. Kick up a stink. Shout about it. Let the women and girls of Nigeria here that we do care. That they are as important to us as reality TV stars. That they are worth just as much.

One Year On...

My blog is one year old today. How time flies. This means that this time last year my degree show exhibition was running, and I'd pretty much finished being at uni. Actually, that does seem a really long time ago now. I'm definitely far from being a student now; I have a "proper" job, I go out to tea rooms on Saturday afternoon's, and I wear pencils skirts a lot. All of these things must mean I'm a proper adult now (let's just ignore the game of ultimate frisbee on Thursday.)

A lot can happen in a year, and a lot did happen. But not so much in an arty sense. I few bits and pieces here and there, but nowhere near what I'd hoped to have achieved in a year. So I'm spending a good deal of time planning; how can I get the money/space/time I need? What direction should I go in first? How many forms would I need to fill in if I did 'A'? How much of a risk would it be if I did 'B'? I'm not getting many answers yet, but I'm starting to know the questions I need to ask. I know that I want to start being more creative again. I have a few projects I'd love to get off the ground. And I know I really don't want to work in an office my whole life.

So, the quest continues...

And then, I graduated...

So there we have it. My student days are officially over, I have my degree, no more university, I will be moving out of home before long, and I even have a proper grown up job now too. But I'm not at all sad. It's the summer of life, and it's time to enjoy it where I can.

News and Updates

Remember this post? Well, that animation has been shortlisted in the Picturing Time Competition! I was completely surprised, as I am not an animator and thought my work probably looked too crude to get anywhere. My animation will be exhibited along with around seventy other shortlisted entries at the Sotheby's Colonnade Gallery, London next week from Monday the 1st of August, until Friday the 5th of August (9am - 4.30pm) so if you're in the area you should pop in for a look around. I can't wait to see how other people responded to the brief, it's quite exciting!
